Tufts Central Utility Plant (CUP) Completed

In the spring of 2015, State Electric’s Utility Division began working in partnership with O’Connor Constructors on Tufts new Central Utility Plant. Our team led by Project Manager Steve Burns, General Foreman Anthony Lavecchia, Foreman Jim Freeman, and CAD Coordinator Rocco Capalino completed the complex project in the spring of 2018.

State Electric’s responsibilities included:

• Cost & Budget Development
• Relocation of existing campus utilities
• CAD/BIM design and coordination
• New site grounding and utility duct banks
• New building lighting, fire alarm and gas detection systems
• New emergency generators
• New Plant Control Systems
• New campus building electrical feeds

The new Central Utility Plant is now providing electricity, steam, hot water, and chilled water to Tufts upper campus and new Science and Engineering complex. In addition to mechanical services, the plant is capable of producing 4 MW’s of electrical power. These new systems reduce Tufts energy costs by 20% and greenhouse gas emission by over 12%.

Colleges and Universities across the United States are committing valuable resources to build these Central/District Energy Plants to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and energy costs. Over the course of the last few years, State Electric has specialized in the electrical construction of these types of projects. Currently, we are working with multiple Construction Managers in New England on similar projects all in various stages of development.
